Human Need

Each of us entirely unique
Fundamentally we are the same
Need, desire, comfort, that we seek
Race that is this funny human game
Food and shelter first without a doubt
Toil and then some warmth for when we rest
Build a home to keep the danger out
Love to soothe that ache within our breast
Friends who give a pat upon the back
Pride in all the milestones we’ve achieved
Strive to be the best that we can be
Hierarchy of the human need
Actualise the self creatively
Maslow’s thoughts enshrined in poetry

Portrait of the Artist

A gallery of thought is on display
And so I wander gently through the room
I stop to pause considering this man
Who hangs his happiness beside his gloom
Courageous how his weakness represents
A theme suffusing every single piece
So frail a life he lived and yet so strong
For hope is in his detail and relief
The man is so familiar then I see
A portrait of the artist that is me

The Art

When beauty walked into the room I drew
My breath and wondered had he asked for me
As if my language I forgot I knew
I stood before him struck so silently
An artist with my canvasses of lust
So huge in public gallery not hung
But beauty isn’t something art should trust
For surface isn’t where our work is done
Undress the beauty show what lies beneath
And let me draw your breath into my soul
The canvas of your heart has sparked belief
A brush of lips and I have lost control
I stripped my love and now I have to find
The art to capture beauty in the mind
