Conscious Beam

So many are not happy with their lot
This life on darkened roads you did not choose
Bemoaning everything that you are not
Will drive you a place where you will lose
Its good to make some changes, take control
Just look within and if by chance you find
That you are not too happy with your soul
Then search until your psyche's realigned
For what you seek is concrete, not a dream
It lives within if you decide to see
So make your inner eye a conscious beam
A torch along the path to who you'll be
And don't give up when frightened and alone
The light of love you shine will guide you home

Tables and Benches

Sleeping on a bench
He is just a child
Growing up alone
Growing to be wild
When he is a man
Haunted by his youth
Look him in the eyes
Tell the bitter truth
Saw but did not act
Knew but did not care
Passed him sleeping rough
Had but did not share
Life is not a game
Life is so unfair
Tables could be turned
What if you were there

To Have and to Hold

Unbearable the tightness when you're lying next to me
You strangle my desire with the pledges you demand
A prisoner, your love is locked and I don't have the key
My freedom like my fate was somehow placed within your hand
Unbearable the burden yet I hold my head up high
Remembering that I was proud and noble once, before
Your shackles cannot stop my heart from dancing, do not try
My mind is free no matter how you lock and bar the door
Unbearable that you believe your love for me is strong
It's jealousy and hatred staring back when I see you
You want me disempowered but you know that this is wrong
And no man is not entitled to enjoy the things you do
My home is now a gaol and the sentence given life
But you can't own another even if you call her wife

Human Need

Each of us entirely unique
Fundamentally we are the same
Need, desire, comfort, that we seek
Race that is this funny human game
Food and shelter first without a doubt
Toil and then some warmth for when we rest
Build a home to keep the danger out
Love to soothe that ache within our breast
Friends who give a pat upon the back
Pride in all the milestones we’ve achieved
Strive to be the best that we can be
Hierarchy of the human need
Actualise the self creatively
Maslow’s thoughts enshrined in poetry

Back Yard

They key to happiness is in your own back yard to seek
But here I am so far away and feeling quite content
Perhaps the truth is each of us is totally unique
And one idea of happiness is not what others meant
My happiness I know is just for me to think about
Although I feign an interest in what others have to say
Suppose my own solution just ensures I have no doubt
I’ve always been particular preferring my own way
So I would say the key for me is keeping my life plain
Not many plans or grand designs to cause undue distress
I live each day without the future looming in the main
And when there’s only me is when my life is at its best
In solitude I travel never lonely just alone
The traveller with no back yard who’s made the world his home
